About the Book
Have you ever believed deep in your soul, you were meant to
do more? That there was some great purpose, if you could just
find it, that would make a difference in your life and others’
lives.
Most people have this thought. It is what has kept me going for
more than three score years. Every day I woke up thinking,
“Today is THAT day! A reason for my living, my purpose, will
miraculously appear.”On August 14, 2005, I was contemplating
ending my life.
I begged God for a reason to live. On October 27, 2005, He gave
me a purpose while listening to five incredible women tell their
stories: Trisha Meili (The Central Park Jogger), Marilyn van
Derbur (former Miss America), Mariane Pearl (wife of Danny
Pearl who was kidnapped and murdered by Al-Qaeda), Erin
Runnion (mother of Samantha who was kidnapped, raped, and
murdered), and Alison Levine (who was born with a heart
disease that was corrected with surgery that allowed her to
become one of America's top women mountaineers).
I met and interviewed these women. This led me to others who
have also suffered horrific events; however, they did not give
us. They rose from ash to flame with courage, faith, drive, love,
humanity, peace, altruism, compassion, vision, freedom, divinity,
honor, integrity, power, and promise.
During the interviews and research, the book transformed into
an exploration of the reasons why the women I interviewed
were different from those who wallow in grief after tragedy.
However, as the book’s focus transformed, so did I. Through
the interviews, through my spiritual journey, I found the
strength, hope and courage to confront my own demons, to
rise from a childhood of abuse and give back.
I, who had never been religious or spiritual, found the meaning
of my life – my highest good, my purpose. I found the answers
to the questions in my tirade of a hopeless “average life” from
August 14, 2005.
